»He is disciplined and radical, he goes naked, and he surprises, even amuses his audience in that, unprotected from the looks, he stamps and jumps to the rhythm of folk dances and repeats traditional sequences of steps.«
TRADITION DRAWS A BLANK
In SunBengSitting, the dancer and performance artist Simon Mayer, who constantly emphasises his roots as a farmer’s son, shows tradition not as the handing down of the past but as a completely living construct. In Upper Austrian dialect, Sunbeng means the bench in the sun in front of the farmhouse. And in the way Anglicisms creep into the rural idyll, Simon Mayer begins to present his debate over the apparent opposites of tradition and modernism, takes the ritualised into a today, and charges it with contrasting, subversive humour. Alone – thus contrary to the folksy togetherness – he leaps and dances, cracks his whip and proves himself in yodelling. An image of masculinity trembles when, stark naked, he picks up a chain saw, it crackles in the stereotypical thinking and it echoes in cacophony when the violin, song, the slapping of the Schuhplattl dance and the chainsaw blend in loops.
Simon Mayer, performer, dancer, choreographer and musician, born in 1984 in Austria, studied at the Vienna State Opera Ballet School, the Performing Arts, Research and Training Studios (PARTS) in Brussels and was a member of the Vienna State Opera Ballet. In 2009, as a singer, guitarist and songwriter, Simon founded his band Rising Halfmoon. As a dancer, choreographer and Musician he performed among others in productions by Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker/ROSAS (The Song), Wim Vandekeybus (Frisking) and Zita Swoon. His choreographic repertoire includes solos, duets and group works that have been performed internationally (o feather of lead, dancing with the soundhobbyist/zita swoon, kopf hoch, monkeymind etc.). Simon was Artist in Residence at the Theatre de LL in Brussels and is the artistic director of the Spiel festival, which he initiated together with his brothers and the M-Arts association.
