Body meets material

After body in a metal structure and bodies (with)in fences now bodies in tubes forms the third and last part of the Squatting Projects, a series of works by the Austrian choreographer Saskia Hölbling together with the philosopher and artist Laurent Goldring, which can take place in urban public space such as a theatre, museum, station or an airport, but also function on large areas outdoors. The aim of Squatting Projects is to enrich the urban environment with subversive body images or potential body visions.

For the premiere of bodies in tubes an installation of rubble chutes that largely occupies the stage of the Tanzquartier Wien in Hall G becomes the image for the pulsing arteries of our city, which circulate in the endless connections of invisible tunnels under our ground. A vertical tube system is combed through by two bodies as if they were inflow and outflow control systems. The bodies come up against rampant organic growth, entrances and exits, and dead-end streets, wedge themselves into niches and spurt out of gaps, are absorbed or ejected.

Here the boundaries are different. Anxiety and protection reach out to one another, inside and outside blur, the living and the artificial form a new organism. Here plastic can breathe, the human body becomes an aspect, a segment of a super-body. It becomes part of a territory that belongs to nobody. Effects and echoes of the movements become visible.

After her dance training in Vienna, the choreographer and dancer Saskia Hölbling continued her studies at the PARTS dance academy in Brussels, and worked among others in the dance companies of Robert Wilson, Willi Dorner, Laurent Pichaud and Benoît Lachambre before founding her own company, DANS.KIAS, in 1995. For this she developed numerous choreographies that were highly internationally regarded, such as  do your desires still burn or rrr . . . (reading, readings, reading), which was created in cooperation with Laurent Goldring and Benoît Lachambre. Since 2001 she has worked continually with the French video artist Laurent Goldring, who has already worked with her on the first two parts of the Squatting Projects.
