what about catastrophes? gathers an ensemble of five dancers and performers on uncertain ground. Based on the endangering of the bodies, the power of images and social ideas of apocalypse, it explores the potential within the structures of breakdown.
In a choreography of falling bodies, fissured political landscapes, ritual movements, speech fragments and sound surfaces, voices overlay one another and narratives about democracy, terrorism, freedom, revolution and civil wars meet: bodies in extreme situations that drive the theatre to the limits of what can be represented.
The audience is invited to move through and in this complex space of events, and to change perspectives: the position and view of the bodies that are in a state of shock and simultaneously seek to unsettle the acceleration machine of capital, media and catastrophe.
performance in German and English
what about catastrophes? is part of an overall project katastrophen (11/15) ideal paradise by Claudia Bosse and a group of international artists, dancers, performers and theoreticians and in the next two years is investigating the structure of catastrophe as the tipping image of society.
Claudia Bosse draws on her collection of interviews that were conducted in cooperation with Günther Auer, from discussions on personal narratives on democracy, freedom, terrorism, the state, history and identity, in cities such as New York, Cairo, Tunis, Tunis, Frankfurt, Zagreb, Tel Aviv, Brussels and Beirut.)
Credits: The interviews were conducted with the support of the Watermill Center New York, the Museum for Contemporary Art Zagreb (MSU), the Goethe Institut in Alexandria, Tunis and Tel Aviv, the Austrian Cultural Forum in Cairo, the School of Visual Theatre, Jerusalem, the Frankfurt Kunstverein, Ashkal Alwan Beirut and others.
The next part, with the title catastrophic paradise, will be performed in September 2014 in Düsseldorf as a co-production with the FFT as part of the De-colonize series, supported by the Kunststiftung NRW.
