A Mary Wigman Dance Evening is the staging of a 1930s-style dance evening. The model is the programme of Wigman’s first US tour, in which she presented nine solo dances from various dance cycles. The dancer and choreographer Fabian Barba approaches this heritage of the German expressionist dancer and pioneer of modern dance through reconstructions. With surprising freshness and intensity, he searches for connections and breaks between early modern dance, his own dance culture in Ecuador and western-influenced contemporary dance. The interest on this 'act of translating' lies in transforming the inevitable modifications of the original into the specific expression of the work and to locate our present-day understanding of dance against the background of dance history.
