Info
Presented as a double bill, two works by the Canadian choreographer Ula Sickle that emerged from her encounter with the dancers Dinozord and Jolie Ngemi living in Kinshasa and which are part of a research into popular dance cultures, their global spread and their identity- and community-forming function. At the same time the two solos are impressive testimony to the current Congolese dance scene, its energy, creativity and commitment with which they combine various artistic and everyday languages and influences, drawing an alternative canon to contemporary western dance.
Solid Gold, danced by Dinozord, traces the roots of hip hop from traditional African dance to forms of entertainment dance, from Broadway to MTV. Jolie on the other hand starts in the present and looks towards the future: Jolie Ngemi confronts the codes of contemporary dance with popular Congolese dances and figures from music clips. In both pieces, the live soundtrack by Yann Leguay is generated by the dancers themselves: their breath, their voices, movements and steps.
