Where is the place from which we can speak of the future, of the future of dance and performance? Of the future that potentialises a present, turns it into the possible? The Tanzquartier Wien is celebrating and ending its eight-year foundation era together with the publication of a book that – following on the TQW programme (Precise) Woodstock of Thinking in September last year – is also dedicated to questions of the future.

The in no way 'commemorative' focus of this foundation period thus looks to the future: a publication that would like to risk a look at the past of the house from the point of view of the future. And because ideas about the future can also conjure it up and provoke it, we would like to aim at and open up the performative potential of the visionary. At the same time, in all the undecidability of prognostication, we formulate our certainty that the movement of dance and performance play their part in the movement of society.

The book, published by Theater der Zeit, gathers perspectives, prospects, assumptions, ideas, prognoses and presumptions about the future of dance and performance and provides a space for considerations about the future that are consciously articulated in heterogeneous voices and terminologies.

The exploration of the possibilities for the artistic branches of dance and performance with regard to new socio-cultural and socio-political contexts marks a thinking over and an outline of what awaits us - uncalled, uncertain, incalculable.

The editors, Sigrid Gareis and Krassimira Kruschkova have invited national and international artists, theoreticians, events organisers and critics in the field of contemporary dance and performance to present their critical ideas on the potential of our branch. The various forms of text in the book correspond with the specific ways of thinking of the authors. In order to make the probing thoughts accessible to the widest possible readership, all texts are being published in German and English. Above and beyond this, the publication includes a DVD with lecture performances on the subject of the future by Milli Bitterli, Philipp Gehmacher, Martin Nachbar and Simone Aughterlony, as well as a conversation between Sigrid Gareis and Veronica Kaup-Hasler.

The Tanzquartier’s look back to the past, according to our editorial plan, will be a look into the future, a look into Futur II, the Futurum exactum. It is intended to be a book on how we will have seen and conceived dance and performance.
