Critique and Clarity

The critical gesture of plain speech based on the example of Hannah Arendt

 

What is critique ? A possible answer is: the struggle against obscurantism, i.e. a wrestling for clarity. Since the times of radical enlightenment, however, this struggle has not just been waged with words, but also in the style and gesture of speaking. Ultimately a political stance cannot be completely decoupled from a physical stance.  Oliver Marchart, philosopher and sociologist, Professor of Political Theory at the University of Vienna, explores the rhetoric and gesture of clear speaking using the example of Hannah Arendt.

Theatre as a political medium

 

 Who is represented, in which way and with what right, who is forgotten? The current crises of democracy have also struck the representation machine of the theatre to the core. Theatre, long the political art form per se, is currently struggling to find an appropriate relationship to society. Often it is either trapped in content representation or it relaxes in the belief in the transformative power of pure aesthetics. Using concrete examples, Florian Malzacher, the artistic director of the Impulse theatre festival, freelance curator, dramaturge and author, shows a theatre that wants to be critical both in its contents and forms, and uses its agonistic potential to perform, test, extend or even to invent society.

Oliver Marchart is professor of political theory at the University of Vienna since 2016. Dr.phil.(1999, University of Vienna), PhD (2003, University of Essex, Government). 2001-2006 Research Assistant at the Institute of Media Studies at the University of Basel. 2005 Fellow at the Columbia University Institute for Scholars at Reid Hall and The Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme Paris. From 2006-2012 he was granted SNF Professorship in the field of Sociology at the University of Lucerne. 2012-2016 Professor of Sociology at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Research focuses: Political theory, social theory, democratic theory, history of political thought, social movement studies, social class studies and political discourse analysis. Florian Malzacher has been the artistic director of Impulse Theatre Festival since 2012, besides that he is a freelance curator, dramaturge and author. From 2006 to 2012 he was the leading Dramaturg/Curator of the multidisciplinary steirischer herbst festival in Graz/Austria. After graduating from Applied Theater Studies at the University of Gie?en he worked as an independent theatre critic and cultural journalist for national newspapers. He still writes regularly in journals like Theater Heute (DE), Tanz (DE), Frakcija (HR), Didaskalia (PL) and Camera Austria (AT). As an independent dramaturg, he worked at the Burgtheater Vienna and at the Frankfurter Mousontrum and at other organizations, with artists like Rimini Protokoll, LolaArias (ARG), Mariano Pensotti (ARG) and  Nature Theater of Oklahoma (USA).
