Erich Fromm once suggested that not only the theory of love should be mastered but its practice as well: “The mastery of the art must be a matter of ultimate concern; there must be nothing else in the world more important than the art.” In view of the fact that there is nothing more important than to love, Deborah Hazler and Macarena Campbell investigate the phenomenon that is love – using their bodies, hearts and voices. A kind look, gentle sounds, tender touches and kisses may be all that is needed to connect with one another. This poetic work about intimacies takes a stand against the fear of unrequited romantic love and embraces a lighter variation of love: soft love, love that doesn’t hurt, love that embodies happiness and joy. An invitation to love, that is to say, love more, more generously and more passionately. Everything and anything that is directly in front of, next to or below us. For this beautiful moment, unfulfilled desire is disregarded.
Deborah Hazler completed her dance education in 2008 at Hollins University in Virginia, USA, after studying at the Trinity Laban conservatory in London until 2006. She has worked as a performer with Bert Gstettner, Oleg Soulimenko, Anne Juren and Sarah Vanhee. As a choreographer she frequently and purposefully faces personal challenges in her works to contemplate various subjects: in offnature (2012) she attempted to liberate the female body of its sexual objectness, in Anthropology of Man (2013) the aim was to pass for a man – and to
manage one hundred press-ups, in Cruel Expectations (2014) she wanted to discover the upper limit of her tolerance to pain. Her works have been shown at imagetanz festival, brut and WUK performing arts. She has been running Raw Matters – Ein ungeschliffener Tanz- und Performanceabend in Vienna together with Nanina Kotlowski since 2010. The independent performance platform serves artists as a space to present unfinished pieces, restagings and reworkings.
Macarena Campbell is a dancer, choreographer and teacher in Santiago de Chile. In 2006, she obtained a BA (Honours) in dance theatre at Trinity Laban, after having completed her education as Intérprete en Danza at the Universidad de Chile in 2002 and as a classical dancer at the Escuela de Ballet del Teatro Municipal de Santiago in 1998. Her
own works include Obra, Homo Ludens and Vertebral, among others. Macarena Campbell has been teaching contemporary dance technique at the Universidad de Chile since 2010 and runs Laboratorio, an interdisciplinary space that aims to bring professional artists and the local community together in the scope of practice-oriented workshops.
