uncanny valley explores the First World War – a war that was global in its extent, and left the battlefield to rage everywhere, to declare war where nothing was yet to be seen of battle: the spectrum ranges from the trenches to inside one’s own body, to language and the power of memory.

In uncanny valley Paul Wenninger dissects the chaos of a synchronism of the everyday, love and battle, an intermeshing of heterogeneous motifs in the same moment. Like a diorama he puts all the elements on the stage simultaneously, exhibits them, produces individual image(words) before the eyes of the audience. What appears is an image of the tearing apart of perspectives, which intertwine in order to bury the distance between them, lose the protection of distance in the trenches. The moment and a second share time synchronously with weeks and years.

Different images condense into a world-view that goes beyond the limits. It is less a question of which images appear appropriate to a war, or which correct images of a war there might be, but rather that the image itself becomes the scene of the conflict.
