„The horizon of beauty of Ana Borralho & João Galante is subject to seizure and achievement: a horizon of acceptance, of intimate change before the other, of a more careful observation before any judgment, of taking part of an experience and not just be a witness.“ – Rui Catalão
The definition of happiness varies from person to person. It can even be considered a state. A state of well-being and satisfaction. How can we be happy? And above all, how can we be happy in an unhappy society? Ana Borralho and João Galante invite twelve young adults from Vienna to talk about what makes them happy. They are not actors and they’re between 18 and 23 years old. Sitting at the same table, with a gun in the middle, they play russian roulette and answer a list of questions about their loves, such as their concerns, their anxieties, their families, and their visions of the future. As words are released, life paths overlap, drawing a multicultural cartography of local youth. A deadly game in search of happiness.
Ana Borralho & João Galante met each other while studying visual arts at AR.CO and worked together regularly in the nineties as actors/co-creators with the Portuguese physical theatre group Olho between 1992 and 2002. They have been working together on projects of their own since 2002 on performance art, dance, installation, photography, sound and video art. Borralho & Galante’s frequent addressed themes include: body/mind, outside/inside, emotion/feeling, me/others, private/public, social/politics.
Since 2004 their work has been shown invited to numerous international festivals worldwide. Borralho and Galante are co-founders of the non-musicians band Jimmie Durham and of the cultural association casaBranca. They are also artistic directors/curators of the live art festival Verão Azul (Lagos, Portugal. They live and work in Lisbon and Lagos.
